Re: earlier start?
Tue, November 8, 2005 - 7:51 PMThis topic has been brought up before, and thoroughly discussed. In the old space, there were scheduling conflicts with other rehearsals and things going on, so the Monday @ 10pm made the most sense. Later in the week is more hectic, and earlier in the evening can be hit or miss. The current time slot is one that is consistently available.
We DID move the start time from 10:30 to 10:15, and have worked hard to start and end on time. This is why we try to communicate the need to show up, sign up, and stick to about 5 minutes. We'd like to finish by midnight, and give as many people who want to get up have the chance to do so.

Re: earlier start?
Tue, November 8, 2005 - 8:00 PMhmmm...
first of all, thank you fort responding.
secondly, and with respect and reverence, does the new venue obviate any of the obstacles to an earlier start?
and,i'm not sure i get much information from the description of"hit or miss"in reference to an earlier start.
all the other open mics i know of and go to start from 7;30 to 9 at the latest.
if it works for you all, cool.
i just can't stay out so late on a weeknight.
i will stop in december though.
if the 10 oclock is not set in stone i think it would be nice to maybe ask folks at the event(s)what they think.
perhaps a simple xeroxed questionare.
"would starting the open mic earlier make participating eaiser or harder for you"
again,i am only coming from my own view point here and if ten is best for the most people it won't hurt my feelings.
see you in december.
peace,

Re: earlier start?
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 12:00 PMI hope some others will chime in on this discussion.
I have no idea whethther the new venue obviates any of the scheduling obstacles to an earlier start. I think Micah could probaby answer that question. My guess, however, would be that since there are MORE folks in residence at CenterRing that were at Tribe, that would translate to more activities going on, hence a busier schedule, with less room for flexibility.
regarding my hit or miss reference: I meant to say that sometimes earlier in the evenings would be free, sometimes not. For an event of this type, it is important to have a consistent time slot and not change it around. Yes, it's an odd time frame, but many regulars have kept coming back and come to depend on that time frame. In addition, and this was a factor when we discussed changing the time before, there isn't much else going on in town to compete with. What else would you do with yourself on a late Monday night, if you're not in bed?
For myself: I just started a new job and i don't get off work until 9pm. Because of this schedule, the open mic is my only creative outlet, and the schedule works great for me. And since I've been intimately involved with running it for almost a year now, I hope that counts for something. -
