so, i bumped into a lot of old open mic regulars tonight - not all together, but you know, last thursday is a scene and alberta's not really that long.
anyway - from what i heard a lot of people aren't really happy with the way the open mic is going these days - and that's why we haven't seen them - they don't feel like coming back. i've been asking people, because obviously, i've been missing them.
i am not stating an opinion on this one way or the other, just relaying what i heard. other comments were also made but since this is an open tribe it would not be in anyone's best interest for me to post those comments here. but, just thought i would toss that out there...

thoughts on tribe lately...
Fri, July 1, 2005 - 9:52 AMah fuck it, after writing it out i decided i could still keep it vague enough to keep it from being gossip, and that it was better posted here.
again, i am just relaying things that i've been hearing, as i've been hearing many disgruntled comments recently (some from our own ranks, but don't ask who, i'm sure that person will say something if they feel inclined).
like i said i saw many, many old open mic regulars out on the street at last thursday - of course i had to say 'where have you been? you've been missed!' and i got almost the same response from everyone - 'i just don't feel like going anymore. the vibe's gone.'
so, here's some more of the things i heard last night - again, i am JUST relaying this stuff, this isn't out of MY mouth.
- "i understand the concept of 'upping the ante' but i feel like it got a bit exclusionary - that it wasn't directed at us or encouraging US to up the ante, but to bringing other, 'better' people in instead."
- "i don't like the way Luco hosts. no one cares if he hosted an open mic in Chicago. This is Portland." (let's not argue this one, i think Luco's adorable and you can't please everyone. It was also suggested, however, that me and zig zag host a night - i'm down for that - in like, August.)
- "i feel like it's turning into a 'regular' open mic - and it never was before. and there are plenty of other 'regular' open mics around town."
- "the vibe's gone." (this was the big one - everyone i talked to said this. my response of course, was that, well, if you want the vibe you gotta BRING it, too).
again, i'm just relaying this information. we're all tired (okay, fuck, I'M tired, i probably won't be sleeping again until the middle of July - in fact, i'll be off the net monday for at least two weeks). but basically a lot of the old open mic regulars feel that the 'vibe' and the 'love' that made Tribe's Open Mic very, very different from the many others around town, is gone...
i have to say i pretty much agree with them, there were some pretty powerful nights in there, but they haven't happened in a while. i must say, these days i myself have little inclination to get up there and read my hippie-dippie love poems (i know, i know, perhaps this is better for all of us, lol) - i did feel a lot more comfortable with it when i had an audience that would, perhaps, understand what i was saying when i mentioned things like prolonged orgasms and talking to trees, hehehe... plus, i liked pretty girls doing orisha dances and such - and i liked being in a room full of people i could exchange extensive hugs with.
case in point of what annoys me, that dude who does the pieces where he does a lot of shouting with the lights down low - yeah, voodoo moon may be a bipolar freak, but i frankly don't think it's cool to stand up on stage and say to a whole crowd 'her poetry sucks.' that, to me, is completely opposite of what tribe's about.
i definitely don't think the disgruntlement (is that a word?) is anyone's 'fault' - we've got different tastes and have all had assloads of other things to do, i know i have NOT done my share of promoting the night like i used to strictly cuz i am caught up in my own shit right now (oh my god do i have enough costumes for the Fair??!?)...
i will tell ya that i spent a lot of time last night trying to convince 'the hippies' to come back... and that i can't deal with it right now but when i get back i'd love to organize a good old-fashioned hippie-love fest like the kind we used to have at Tribe - no one else has to help me with that if they don't want to. ;-)

Re: thoughts on tribe lately...
Fri, July 1, 2005 - 1:30 PMahh, hmmm... lemme put on my hippie hat (yes, i do have a hippie hat, somewhere).
well, i'm not really quite sure where to go with this. i don't think at any point we've tried to make the space exclusive, but rather inclusive and have brought a great deal more of a base to the event (read: larger turn out in general). i remember coming to some shows awhile back and having 3 people on the list at 10:30... and i was one of them. ick.
as far as the 'vibe' being gone, i'd agree wholeheartedly that whoever wants a particular vibe, needs to work towards manifesting it.
we're not (at least i'm not) into the concept of creating any one thing or another - rather my interest is in what happens on its own. of course, that applies to when i am in the audience.
when i'm working i am definitely trying to present something different and interesting, a particular mood or feeling... i believe this is my responsibility as a performer. is my particular mood or feeling any less valid than anyone elses?
</ hippie hat>
actual problems people may have with a larger participation group (and avoiding such non-workable adjectives as 'vibe'):
1. can't choose when i go on.
2. i may not get on at all.
3. shorten my set to 5 minutes when i want to go 20.
4. don't know all these people anymore, makes me uncomfortable.
so.. yeah. that can make 'a different vibe' in my opinion. things have been a bit faster paced and there is a sense of urgency about what is going on.
some of the variety has been lost over the past few weeks, but really now - is anyone turned away at the door? "sorry, no diggery tonight"... has this happened?
the people who are not coming are lamenting that their thing is not being done anymore? my only answer can be: show up and do it!
if i'm wrong, i'll shut the hell up. i certainly haven't been involved in every aspect of every show.
<hippie hat>
show up. bring your friends. get on the list. do your thing, whatever it is. make it good... no, make it great!

Re: thoughts on tribe lately...
Sat, July 2, 2005 - 5:45 PMgood discussion points, definitely... although i wouldn't give us too much credit for the bigger crowd, it was already growing when nature decided to head off to wilderness school...
one thing i do miss - all the collaboration - seems we've 'upped the ante' so much we've got a bunch of solo rock stars now, lol...
you know, this could all just be 'summer', too - because frankly i haven't had a moment's peace to really write anything and i know i'm not the only one...
i, for one, am giving it a rest for a few weeks - go to the woods, trip my brains out (probably) and come back with a whole pile of hippie wisdom to share, all put down to awful poetry for your listening pleasure. ;-)
but anyway... at a later date...

Re: thoughts on tribe lately...
Mon, July 4, 2005 - 8:12 PMWow - I go away for five days and look whapt happens...
Points:
1) We NEVER have enough time for everyone to perform. This, in and of itself, is something that didin't happen regularly. Ask Micah about donations. I know that we make more in donations than we did a few months back. So as far as the turn out, we get people in there.
2) When I promoted it - and I mean REALLY promoted it - we had LOTS of peeps. I simply don't have time to be the SOLE promoter, so I stopped puttin' the word out in order to tend to other projects and WALA! the numbers died down....so if anyone want to KICK it in and help with that aspect (instead of listening to the complainers - and I realize that Dori is just trying to help -) than please do.
3) I hear pretty regularly that people like Lucaso's hosting. So the few annoyed-hippie-west-coasters that don't like it really don't hold water for me. I get approached A LOT (and I mean a TON) after the shows, before the shows and on Tribe ) and I get a shit load of positive feedback.
conclusion:
Maybe the peeps that don't want to be there just have nothing better to do right now but cause a little drama. I think that they were a "clique" in and of themselves and now that new people are there they don't like it.
As for Voo Doo Moon. She showed her true colors and the truth is that she is the rotten apple that unfortunatley spoiled things. We should NOT use her as an example.
My gig is this, if you want to change things work at it, don't just talk about it. Everyone at TRIBE is open to ANYTHING.....so to complain about it is futile and passive-aggressive and to listen to folks that want to complain says nothing about the poeple that LIKE it and don't complain.
I for one an open to whatever poeple want as long as they WORK for it. So if you want new blood or old blood or whatever - than promote it - volunteer to do it yourself or bring some constructive ideas to the table.
My two cents.
